Roundup September 2016: Gamer Rebellion, a Road Trip And a Store Opening

I know last month I said the same thing, that we had a packed month with lots of events going on and all, but if I thought last month was hectic, I clearly didn’t know what hectic meant. September has been a hectic month, with an average of 1.25 events each week( haha, yeah I did the math). Events was pretty much the overarching theme for the month really. If there was one thing that defined the month it would have to be Gamer Rebellion. For those who didn’t hear about it or have heard about it and don’t quite know what it is, Gamer Rebellion is an initiative that we started wherein we went from  college to college showcasing some of the best gaming hardware in the market right now. It all started with the launch of the RX 480 in India that we hosted in Radisson, Blu Dwar...

Gamer Rebellion — Indraprastha University

The Gaming Central team just got back from the second Gamer Rebellion at Indraprastha University, Dwarka and it was pretty damn good. First off a shout out to all the guys and three girls who made it to the event. It was great meeting all these students who were extremely helpful and way too polite (they kept calling me sir!). Gurnoor and I started the show with our lame jokes and constant fumbling up of words, but the students seemed to have a blast though. We had presentations by Shrey and Manas about AMD, G2A and Gaming Central. After which we did an interactive quiz with the attendees and gave away some goodies. We also had Nishant with us (the guy who won a RX 480 at it’s launch) and we presented him with his brand new RX 480. After that we opened the floor for the students to e...

Indie Game Jam Event Round Up

Last weekend, that is the 27th-28th of August, we got to be a part of something quite spectacular, The Indie Game Jame. A competition where game developers were to make a game around a given theme within a 24 hour time limit. Now this isn’t your regular competition where people are biting each other’s heads off to get in front. This event was more casual than our office’s dress code (and I wear shorts to work). Teams were encouraged to interact with each other, share ideas and even help competitors if they so wished. The aim for the 24 hour long marathon was simple -create a kickass playable prototype based on the themes announced on the spot. The winner gets INR 40,000 on the spot and additional funding support to complete the game. Before the event kicked off, Piyush an...

NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1060 Revealed

NVIDIA has finally revealed their response to the RX 480, AMD’s high performance budget GPU – the GTX 1060. The card promises huge improvements, claimed by NVIDIA to be faster than the GTX 980 which comes at a price tag of about $400, while the GTX 1060 is said to cost only around $250. The GPU will have 1280 CUDA Cores, a base clock speed of 1.5 GHz with about 6 GB of GDDR5 memory running at 8 Gbits/s. If the card delivers on what it promises, you can have a great GPU to run all your games in high settings without them straining your wallet. But while these specifications sound impressive on paper, we still need to find out how the card performs in real life and wheth...

New RX 480 Drivers Fix Excess Power Draw Issue

RX 480 driver update – Radeon Software 16.7.1-  is now available. This follows the concerns around excess current from the PCIe bus. In this driver AMD has implemented a change to address power distribution on the Radeon RX 480 – this change will lower current drawn from the PCIe bus. Also included is an option to reduce total power with minimal performance impact. Users will find this as the “compatibility” UI toggle in the Global Settings menu of Radeon Settings. This toggle is “off” by default. Finally, they’ve implemented a collection of performance improvements for the Polaris architecture that yield performance uplifts in popular game titles of up to 3%. These optimizations are designed to improve the performance of the Radeon RX 480, and should substantially offset the p...
