The next Overwatch event celebrating the Year of the Rooster begins in a couple of days, and till now we’ve only seen two skins, one each for Mei and D.Va. However, a Chinese ad may have leaked the event-limited skins for four more characters. If the ad is to be believed, these four skins are inspired by the Chinese folktale Journey to the West. Apparently, the text translates to “”Journey to the West limited skins. Year of the Rooster, free trial: January 24 – January 31.” The image was posted by Reddit user hythl0day, according to whom a Chinese player “accidentally found an ad about the ‘free week’ event of OW in China. The story inspiring the skins has seen a number of adaptations, including those in Dragon Ball and Enslaved: Odyssey to t...
Overwatch is a frantic game, and with so much going on at once, it can be hard make out what’s happening and who’s going to survive in team fights. Even more so when you’re spectating in the third person. Thankfully, Blizzard is planning to add a floating health bars over all the players as can be seen in the new PTR patch, making it easier to read and maybe predict the outcomes for both spectators and casters. The above video was posted to YouTube by esports person Doa. He says, “”I think this is going to help casting quite a bit in some of these bigger fights. You can tell the narrative of the fight a little bit more, you can see who’s getting lower. Poor Zenyatta, will he live through the fight? It’s so exciting now because I can actually look a...
The patch to nerf Roadhog’s hook went live recently on the Overwatch Public Test Realm, and before it gets added to the main client, it seems like we’ll see more changes in the next patch. Blizzard apparently thinks that it might have been a little too rough on the pot bellied hook master, and will help him out a bit, making his hook more effective. Designer Geoff Goodman explains, “The new PTR update adds some more line of sight checks towards the left/right of a potential hook target. This means it should be easier to hook someone who is sticking halfway out of a doorway, or behind a thin pole, etc. These checks are also used for the persistent line of sight check, so if a hook target moves behind a slim object like a stump or a light pole, they won’t be released ...
2016 was a long year. Longer then most actually, being a leap year with an extra day. Which helped since we needed the extra time catch up with all the happenings that that took place in gaming this Year. Virtual Reality Gains Momentum With both Occulus Rift and HTC (and Valve’s) Vive becoming available to the public in 2016, the stage was clearfor VR to be part of the mainstream. Or at least for gamers with high end PC and budget for what is,effectively, a very expensive display. There was some furor over Occulus underhanded tactics to lock games to platform, and about its privacy policy. Vive was lauded for its more ‘open’ approach. VR still lacked killer apps though – most games seemed to be little more than short tech demos. Playstation VR debuted later in the year di...
From the beginning people have complained about Roadhog’s hook and how it can sometimes pull enemies from the corner or even through the walls. No more, says Blizzard. On the Overwatch forum, principal designer Geoff Goodman talks about upcoming changes to the hero, especially his hook ability, “Firstly, the hook victim will now move in to the position directly in front of Roadhog, rather than just a straight line towards him. There is a cap on how far ‘to the side’ you can be pulled, so you can’t just hook someone, spin 180, and dump someone off a cliff. This part (along with some other bug fixes) should generally make the hook feel more consistent as to where the victims get pulled.” The line of sight check will be changed to originate from RoadhogR...

In Overwatch, a hero’s ultimate is usually their most powerful/useful ability, and every hero usually has only one ultimate. Until now. As part of the latest update, Blizzard has given Symmetra, the light-bending support two ultimates. Lead Designer Jaff Kaplan discusses it in the latest Developer Update video, which you can watch below. “Symmetra is going to be the first character in Overwatch to actually have a choice of ultimates,” Kaplan said. When the ability charges up, it’ll light up as it used to, but now players can do one of two things. Either they can use the teleporter ability (the old ultimate) or use a Shield Generator that can protect the entire team. Blizzard is making more changes to the moveset. Symmetra can now use a Photon Barrier, which Kaplan comares to Re...
