We’ve Finally Achieved Toy Story Level Graphics In Video Games, And Nobody Seems To Care

Remember all the buzz around the Playstation 2 era about Video Games finally achieving Toy Story level of graphics? Cinematic in earlier Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts games sure teased us some great visuals, but none of that ever translated to the actual in-game graphics. Over the last few years, visual fidelity has slowly been on the rise, both on PC and consoles. Games like Metro: Last Light, Crysis, Horizon Zero Dawn, Witcher and GTA V (to name a few) have raised the bar for what we expect from games touting highly details graphics and immersion.

So when Kingdom Hearts 3 recently announced the addition of Toy Story World in the game, not a lot of heads turned at how near perfectly the developers had matched the game’s visuals with that of the movie. Sony’s promise of delivering “movie-quality 3D graphics” had finally come true, but gamers were somehow not that impressed. And that’s weird. Toy Story world in Kingdom Hearts 3 looks absolutely stunning, and is definitely at par and at times even sharper than those of the movies. I mean just look at this:Kingdom Hearts 3 is a massive leap when it come to graphics in video games – it’s not about adding more pixels on to the screen but actually delivering a excellent art style that stands up with Disney’s top notch standards. KH3 does something that even official Toy Story games couldn’t do. If nothing else, we now live in a world where Video Games can deliver graphics at with Disney movies, and that’s an achievement worthy of pride.

  1. Yeah, unfortunately those meshes are still not good. It might look great in a still shot, but the video gives it away. Those models are still static, i.e. they’re the same ‘ole ploy tech we’ve had since PS1 (ergo, still not open sub div). The video game industry is still very cheap (and stubborn) about developing any quality animation tech, and it still shows. Video game animation is (and has always been) a joke, and those stiff high count models are just salt in a wound. It’s so sad/disappointing. Worse, gamers seem to not be able to tell the difference, they’ll see something like Moana, yet somehow still praise garbage like Witcher (or this). The only tech I’ve ever seen (that deserves any praise) is the recent Injustice 2, and its smart mocap. Those scrubbed meshes we’re a long time coming and the only light I’ve seen in game animation –really ever.
