Two of Naughty Dog’s loved most love franchises, The Last of Us and Uncharted are coming out as movies, but the release date has a big question mark.
Neil Druckman, the Creative Director behind both the titles, in a recent interview with The Frame said, “I have been a writer on it (The Last of Us movie adaptation), but right now it hasn’t moved anywhere in the past couple years.” He goes on to say, “The Uncharted film has been in development now for I think nine years so we’ve learned these things happen at their own time, very slowly.”
In a past interview with IGN, Druckman had offered some disappointing news about the movie, “”I know I said in an interview a while back we had a table read, got the script to a good place and it kind of entered development hell like these things tend to do,” he said. “There hasn’t been any work done on it in over a year and a half.”
Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark in Game of Thrones is supposed to be the front-runner for the role of Ellie in The Last of Us movie. But if the same level of progress continues, it’s possible that another actress may have to be considered. In an interview with IGN in 2014, Maisie Williams said, “At this moment, it’s looking like, ‘Yes,’ but it’s still such early days. If they make it in 30 years, they can’t have a 40-year-old Ellie. So at the moment, it’s looking good, and I’d love to do it. Hell yeah.” But seeing the updates from Druckman, the future seems bleak.
The Uncharted movie has been in development a lot longer than The Last of Us, but Druckman didn’t have any updates to offer about that. Mark Wahlberg is in the running for the role of Nathan Drake, who according to Nolan North (who plays Nathan Drake in the game) may not be the best choice for the movie adaptation. As for when the movie will be released, is still under speculation. The official date as given by Sony, however, is June 2017.
