Review: Samsung T3 Portable SSD (500GB)

Samsung is back on the block with the T3 Portable SSD. Having a capacity upto 2TB in about 45 cubic cm of space, this small device surely packs a punch. It comes with a USB Type-C port and boasts of transfer rates up to 450 MBps, about 4X faster than current hard drives.

While it comes with a hefty price tag (about INR 17,000/- for the 500 GB model), the T3 is a lucrative choice for people who want to transfer huge chunks of data quickly.

The SSD is barely the size of a business card, which means you can easily fit it in your pocket and carry your data wherever you go. And it weighs only about 51g, so it is quite lightweight as well. Technical specs can be seen as follows:

The T3 comes with a USB-C port, which means when coupled with a USB-C cable it can work with the new MacBook, and all mobile devices that offer a USB-C port — mostly Android tablets and a couple of phones for now.

The drive includes a USB-C to USB-A cable, which allows it to work with all existing computers and their regular USB ports, thus allowing it to work far more devices than other portable devices. The half aluminium-half soft matt black finish gives it a stylish, premium feel and the rounded edges make sure that the SSD is comfortable to hold as well.

As seen from the USBFlashSpeed benchmark tool, the SSD is able to reach write speed of up to 422.7 MBps and read speed of 431 MBps. However, these values may vary with your system configuration.  The device works the fastest when paired with USB 3.0 or 3.1. It is compatible with USB 2.0 as well, but the transfer rate drops significantly. So, if you’re a gamer, you’re definitely in for a treat. Thanks to the high transfer rates, you can say goodbye to frustrating loading times, and hello to a hassle free gaming experience. There is a drastic reduction in loading times as well, compared to conventional hard drives (especially for games like Fallout 4 and Just Cause 3). And for those who are fans of open world games with a lot going on in the background, it also can also reduce hitching/stuttering.

The only major drawback of the T3 is the hefty price tag, but for the ones who live on the go, the T3 is the perfect nifty package that takes care of all their data storage and transfer needs. Moreover, the SSD storage makes it much faster and sturdier than the average USB drive, and as a result, you’re able to utilize the 3 year warranty offered by Samsung for the T3.
