Before you come at me with pitchforks, hear me out. In the trailer for The Last Of Us Part II, it’s clear that Ellie is badly injured, and thirsty for revenge. She’s playing the guitar, while singing a song that clearly indicates that she is alone, and all she has is her gun to protect her. Yes, we do  see Joel walking in halfway through, who then asks her what she intends to do, at which she replies, with deadly intent, that she’s going to find and kill every one of ‘them’. Now, this is my theory, and I have heard others having the same thought.
