Joel Will Die In The Last Of Us Part II

Joel Will Die In The Last Of Us Part II

Before you come at me with pitchforks, hear me out.

In the trailer for The Last Of Us Part II, it’s clear that Ellie is badly injured, and thirsty for revenge. She’s playing the guitar, while singing a song that clearly indicates that she is alone, and all she has is her gun to protect her. Yes, we do  see Joel walking in halfway through, who then asks her what she intends to do, at which she replies, with deadly intent, that she’s going to find and kill every one of ‘them’.

Now, this is my theory, and I have heard others having the same thought. At the end of the Last Of Us, in his attempts to rescue Ellie, Joel kills a lot of important members of the Fireflies, including a lot of doctors, soldiers, and important leaders. And Ellie was the cure to the whole infection.  this act would not be taken lightly by the rest of the Fireflies, who are bound to come at Joel for revenge. The scene from the new trailer looks like it happens soon after the Fireflies catch up with Ellie and Joel. Ellie survives but, according to my theory, Joel does not. And thus begins a tale of revenge to rival that of Kill Bill. Probably.

It’s quite clear that Ellie will be the main character in The Last Of Us Part II. Killing off Joel, and then having Ellie set out on the path of vengeance is a much darker narrative than Naughty Dog usually tells in its games. But this isn’t Uncharted, and the world of The Last Of Us is a bit darker than Nathan Drake’s world of pirate treasure and plunder. Having Joel dead is not something I want to see, but I trust in Naughty Dog’s ability to deliver a excellent game and a heartfelt narrative. Just brace yourself for some teary moments in the Ellie’s new adventure.

  1. That’s my theory as well, points that supports this are Joel looking as if he’s walking in from the “light” as he walks into the house, another thing is they don’t show his face, meaning he must have died not long after part 1 and they don’t want to show his face cus it hasn’t aged from part 1. Im hoping im wrong but if that’s what naughtydog wants then im in.

  2. My theory was: ellie finds out about joel’s lie and they get seperated for a time, during this time joel is killed and ellie cant forgive herself for this seperation and goes for revenge, being under pressure ellie sees joel around and talks to him…

  4. This is exactly why I did NOT want a fucking sequel to TLOU!! Why do they have to go around a fuck with an already near perfect story!? It ended fantastically well, with no need for any kind of continuation. Why couldn’t they just make another game as a prequel or even brand new characters in the same universe 🙁 I don’t know why they went down this path, especially when Drucker said they didn’t want to make a sequel :((((

Also, I would have much preferred playing as Joel in a prequel, his character and story is far more interesting. I want to know what happened after his daughter died, and the issues between him and his brother. I don’t really care what happened after Joel saved Ellie, the ending of the story was perfection!

      • Oh, I’ll still buy it, and play it but, I just wish they would just leave great stories where they are, rather than continue on something where there is no need to! Why mess with something that you just aced!? Now part1 will always and forever be associated with part2 when there was no need whatsoever for a part2 :(((

  5. This theory of yours was in a comment thread the day the trailer was announced and you’re only using it to sell ads. Jerk.
