Mortal Kombat X Review

Mortal Kombat X Review

The game is in many ways an evolution of 2011’s Mortal Kombat. The gruesome fatalities and x-ray attacks that Mortal Kombat is famous for are more disgusting/gut wrenching than ever. These fatalities are made much more convincing due to improved special effects.

It is very easy to get caught up with the visuals and forget there is a deep and meaningful game underneath. And we don’t blame you; cause almost each and every move in the game shows you yet another way to torture someone. But that doesn’t divert the focus away from its original motive, “K”ombat.

The last Mortal Kombat delivers a robust story mode. The fight for the out world realm has stirred up great turmoil causing fallen elder gods and demons alike to contend for the seat by any means necessary. It remains a similar tale but a new generation has risen to defend earth realm including the offspring of classic Mortal Kombat characters. The introduction of new faces could inspire renewed interest for some of the fans, but when you see characters like Cassie Cage closely resemble their parents fighting style and personalities, you won’t be the only one to see that the generation gap is a bit blurry.

Story Line

Mortal Kombat’s story depicts the evolving relationship of Cassie’s parents, Johnny and Sonya and in turn portrays Cassie’s story as well providing glimpses of some of the best and worst qualities they had passed on to her. Other than that you really need to have a strong interest in the series’ stories to be able to not only enjoy but simply understand what really is going on.

Fighting Mechanics

Once you get to the fighting you will find that the battles are both deep and accessible. The rosters comprise of 25 characters with 3 variations each. The core move sets are similar across characters, leaving only special move sets the real challenge.  With so many options for each character you may not remember most of them but at least you get a chance to view actions of characters that you may have otherwise overlooked.

The action is a bit smoother than the previous edition.  The stiffness in combat that was existent in the previous games has been replaced with greater flow during fights. In addition to the usual attacks, Mortal Kombat X also brings the last games meter back, allowing you to power up a special move, break an opponent’s combo or dish out a violent come back move in the form of a x-ray attack.

Modes

Test your luck mode makes a comeback, where combat modifiers alter everything from environmental effects, your ability to use special attack, which adds a great amount of variety to the standard combat.

Krypt is a mode which takes you into a first person view point which allows you to unlock stuff like art, character skins and finishing moves. But you’re going to have to play a lot of Mortal Kombat X to be able to purchase everything.

Online Component

The online component is nothing special as it does take time to find someone else on the server and all the time you spent in waiting could just as easily go into vain if either you or your opponent is lagging which leads to mistimed combo attacks, but luckily this isn’t a regular occurrence.

Pros

  • Definitely the best fighting mechanics of any Mortal Kombat game so far.
  • Great visuals
  • Good story line

Cons

  • Some new characters fail to stand out
  • Some fatalities are too gruesome (is that even a thing?! I literally can’t even think of anything else)

Verdict

There is a lot to do in Mortal Kombat X that it takes much effort to try and get bored of it. This is the most visually stunning Mortal Kombat till date as well. It is a lot of fun and it gets a thumbs up from me.

You can buy the game and support us 🙂 Trust us you will enjoy the game!
