While many games have tried to emulate the satisfying loot grind from Diablo, few have succeeded in doing so. That number only gets smaller when it comes to delivering that same addictive loot treadmill in first or third person. Games like Destiny and The Division have both been massively successful. but neither seem to capture the essence of what makes Diablo so good.
And then comes Warframe. A free to play shooter/melee title for PC and consoles, Warframe was released in 2013. It’s primarily a multiplayer game, and while it was well recieved at launch, it has become somewhat of a phenomenon since then. You play as one member of a race of ancient warriors, awoken from cryosleep. The world is in turmoil and there’s a threat that you need to eliminate. The basic premise is simple, but the game’s depth lies in it’s gameplay, character progression and customization. You have both melee weapons and guns to choose between and the motion is super fast and fluid.
Over the course of 4 years, the development team – Digital Extremes – have put out almost 250 updates for the game, both big and small. There have been bulky content updates, various fixes and tweaks, and even visual overhauls. This is a team that is passionate about their game, and has cultivated a massive audience for their game. Unlike most free to play games, they do not indulge in exploitative practices, instead all paid content is feels fair and worth it. As of right now, its sits among the top 10 most played games on Steam, even higher than GTA V.
If you’ve been let down by Destiny and The Division, be sure to give Warframe a shot. The game now does a much better job of introducing the player to its mechanics, has a rich lore to get invested in, and a very active player base. If you’re confused about getting Destiny 2, why not try Warframe, and get your friends to play with you, since it is free.
