A 23-year-old man has been charged with plotting to assassinate Emmanuel Macron at France’s Bastille Day parade, a judicial source said.
The man is a self-described nationalist and was previously convicted for condoning terrorism in 2016 and sentenced to three years in prison, of which 18 months were suspended. He was arrested last Wednesday and told investigators that he wanted to kill the French president at the 14 July national parade in Paris, which was also going to be attended by US President, Donald Trump. He said he also wanted to attack “Muslims, Jews, blacks, homosexuals”, the source added. He has since been charged with plotting to commit a terrorist act, the judicial source said.

Members of an unnamed video game forum alerted the Police when the would-be assassin inquired about where he could buy “a Kalashnikov-type weapon” to use for carrying out an attack. Police arrested the man at his home in the northwest Paris suburb of Argenteuil and found three kitchen knives in his vehicle and analysis of his computer found that he had conducted internet searches on potential targets.
Thanks to the alertness of these forum members a potentially fatal act of terrorism has been stopped. This should act as a PSA that you should report suspicious activity on the internet to the authorities, which could potentially save a lot of lives.
