The Video Game industry is constantly changing, with good and bad trends coming and going regularly. As more and more gamers in India are getting into games, many of these trends have a massive impact on us as well. So today we are discussing the top 5 video game trends of 2017 that Indian gamers hate.
GST Price Rise
The cost of being a gamer in India is high enough already, with consoles, PC hardware and games themselves usually costing more here than they abroad. This has been a major reason for the rampant piracy in the country. Now with the new GST introduced, video game prices have been jacked up even further. We are seeing the difference already, with the price of Call of Duty World War 2 and Destiny 2 already getting increased, directly as a result of the GST. As you can imagine, no one is happy about this.
Too Many Early Access/Unfinished Games
In many ways, Early Access has been a boon for both developers and gamers. We as gamers get to see the game as it develops and evolves, while developers get the added budget to make the best game they want to. However, lately there have been so many games that remain forever in Early Access, and with the rise of regular patches and updates, it’s almost as if every game comes out unfinished and is in some for of Early Access. Just look at Mass Effect: Andromeda, which got pushed out early and then had to be fixed with patches over the course of the last few months. The same stands true for No Man’s Sky, which finally seems complete almost a year after release.
Mediocre Open World Games
Open World Games have been flooding the market, and in 2017 it has almost become the norm that games need to be open world to have any kind of mass appeal. That simply is not true, and gamers are interested in a linear game that is well presented and has great gameplay.
Over-Saturated Shooter Market
Lawbreakers, Overwatch, Call of Duty, Battlefield, Paladins, Destiny, Wildlands, Fortnite, and the list just goes on. It’s become so hard to differentiate between some of these games, and even the good ones like Lawbreakers are suffering because of it. How does anyone play all of these games when each of them is a massive time sink? Time and money being stretched thin between so many game is good neither for the gamer nor the developer.
VR Shooting Galleries
With proper consumer grade VR headsets becoming available in 2016, we expected to see some great titles made exclusively for VR. Sadly, most of them have been disappointing, specially the mediocre VR shooting galleries, that are one off throwaway experiences. If VR is to truly succeed, it really needs that killer app, or it will simply remain a gimmick for years to come.
