According to a report by Bloomberg, Razer is interested in making a smartphone for gamers. Earlier this year, Razer had acquired the smartphone company Nextbit, so this news doesn’t come as a surprise. The company is planning an IPO in Hong Kong, potentially valuing its business at USD 5 billion. Some of the funds will be directed by Razer towards the development of its smartphone.
At the time of the acquisition, Razer had said that Nexbit would function as an independent entity, but we can’t be sure whether the new phone will launch under the Razer or the Nextbit name. There’s also a question of price and feasibility, considering that the performance and hardware of a gamer specific smartphone would need to be better than the average consumer smartphone. All these issues will need to be addressed, but Razer isn’t planning to IPO till October 2017, so it’s possible that we may not get to hear anything soon. Also, we can safely assume that the phone won’t be launched anytime before 2018.
