A petition has started on Change.org that wishes Lucasfilms to revoke Star Wars Licence. John Hunt started this petition with a single signature and now has over 40 thousand supporters. You can check out and vote here.
The reasons stated are pretty obvious and genuine. EA has had the Star Wars video game license for the last 4 years, and in that time they’ve proven to their consumers that they honestly don’t care about the gameplay experience or content. They’d rather rush out a game that will try and milk as much money out of consumers as possible.
Visceral’s single player linear Star Wars game seemed to oppose the trend but the game was cancelled. In addition to that, the Visceral studio was shut down by EA, the reason being they couldn’t monetize the game as it was a single player experience. I wrote a detailed piece on the same that you can find here.
This may seem like a good idea that might eventually work out but not without tons of implications. For starters, the studio responsible for quality star wars games, LucasArts, was shut down.
Lucasfilm, the studio that made the franchise, is now owned by Walt Disney. Disney sold the exclusive right to publish Star Wars games to EA for 10 years. There may be endless implications and problems to revoke this licence, but hey, it costs nothing to dream.
