You knew that Ryder, the protagonist in Mass Effect: Andromeda can be played as either male or female. But did you also know that these two versions are actually siblings?
In an interview with Playstation Access, Mac Walters (the Creative Director) revealed that not only the male and female versions of Ryder are siblings, but they will also exist in the game world at the same time.
“What a lot of people don’t know, little surprise here, is that these two are brother and sister,” he said. “And they both exist in the game world at the same time. So if you’re playing as the sister Ryder, female Ryder, your brother is somewhere in the universe.”
In the original Mass Effect trilogy, you could play Shepard as a male or female as well, but the character existed individually. According to Walter, Bioware wants to move away from the focus on a single, title hero.
Mass Effect: Andromeda got a beautiful 4K gameplay trailer for the Sony Playstation Meeting. It was also revealed that the character in the N7 suit in the E3 trailer of the game was actually the protagonist’s father. Looks like Andromeda is going to be a family affair.
“We’ve got the full Ryder family full sort of now revealed,” Walters said. “We’ll do names and things in the future as well.”
Mass Effect: Andromeda is set to release for the PC, Xbox One and Playstation 4 sometime in 2017.
