Lienzo Launches “Behind Mulaka” Video Series Exploring Tarahumara Culture

You’ve had a good look at Mulaka’s gameplay and you’ve seen its Nindies debut, but how much do you know about the culture it’s based on? Despite sharing a rich history and fascinatingly unique lore, the indigenous culture of northern Mexico’s Tarahumara is rarely given the spotlight it deserves. Ahead of Mulaka’s release early next year, Lienzo is setting out to do just that with the launch of a three-part video series entitled “Behind Mulaka.”

Watch “Behind Mulaka” Chapter 1: The Tarahumara Culture:

Aptly named “The Tarahumara Culture,” the series’ first chapter acts as a primer of this indigenous peoples’ history and renown. From their incredible stamina and “superhuman” long-distance running talents, to the beautifully iconic geography they call home, get a glimpse into the cultural heart that beats through Mulaka.

It’s this vibrancy that drives “Behind Mulaka,” offering viewers the opportunity to better understand the traditions and beliefs of the Tarahumara peoples, given their roles in Mulaka’s development and, ultimately, gameplay. Much in the way players are given unlimited stamina to highlight the Tarahumara’s talents for long-distance running, everything from language to the afterlife is lovingly adapted to ensure the experience makes the most of video games as an interactive medium.

Mulaka follows the journey of a Sukurúame – a Tarahumara shaman – as he fights back the foulness corrupting the land. Whether harnessing the culture’s running prowess to engage in fast-paced platforming and hand-to-hand combat, or drawing upon the powers of demigods to transform and approach the Sierra Tarahumara from a different perspective, Mulaka pulls from detailed research to present an authentic representation of Tarahumara culture.

Mulaka will launch on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4 and Xbox One in early 2018.
