Ever since it was announced that Guillermo del Toro would be appearing with Hideo Kojima at the 2016 DICE Summit, fans have been anticipating some hints as to what Kojima’s first post-Konami game will be. Kojima hasn’t revealed many concrete details about the game just yet, but it is certainly a possibility that whatever it is will star The Walking Dead actor Norman Reedus, who was previously working with Kojima and del Toro on the ill-fated Silent Hills.
Kojima recently met with Reedus to discuss the newly reborn Kojima Productions. The details of that meeting are not public knowledge, but one has to imagine that it involved the two of them at the very least discussing ideas for a potential video game project to work on together. While that’s just speculation at this point, comments Kojima has made today at the 2016 DICE Summit seem to add fuel to that fire.
Kojima says, “I’m a fan of Norman, and he’s an extremely nice guy. And last year he was worried, so I went up with him and told him, ‘Everything is fine. I became independent. I’m doing my own thing now.’”
Kojima added that he isn’t sure when he would work with Reedus again. If it were up to the actor, it would probably be Kojima’s next game, however, as Reedus seemed particularly crushed by Silent Hills being cancelled. In fact, it was just a few months ago that he expressed hope that Kojima and Guillmero del Toro would reunite to work on a new project together.
It seems like the logical next step for all involved would be to develop a spiritual successor to Silent Hills. Hideo Kojima still wants to make a horror game, and Konami has shown no interest in reviving the project. While they wouldn’t be able to utilize the Silent Hills brand name, the trio could potentially develop a brand new horror IP together. Alternatively, they could revive Guillermo del Toro’s Insane project, the rights for which reverted to the celebrated film director following THQ’s downfall.
After the heartbreak of the Silent Hills cancellation and the bizarre saga at Konami that followed, it would be nice to see some form of the project realized. Hopefully Norman Reedus and Hideo Kojima are able to work together yet again, and give gamers the experience they’ve been waiting for since the Silent Hills playable teaser P.T. captured everyone’s attention back in the summer of 2014.
