Less than two months after it was launched through Steam Early Access, Hero’s Song, the upcoming RPG by Pixelmage Games has been cancelled. The studio will shut down its doors as well.
The game was revealed earlier this year as Pixelamge’s debut title. Founded by John Smedley, the former head of Sony Online Entertainment, it was pitched as an open world rogue-like fantasy action RPG with both single and multiplayer elements.
It breaks my heart to have to do this 🙁 https://t.co/pTWymRiYn3

The news was tweeted by Smedley, providing a link to the Pixelmage website, which now has but a single page informing players of the studio’s end. “It’s with a heavy heart that I have to report that Pixelmage Games is going to be shutting down and we have ceased development on Hero’s Song,” the message reads. “For the last year, our team has worked tirelessly to make the game we’ve dreamed about making, and with your support, and the support of our investors, we were able to get the game into Early Access. Unfortunately sales fell short of what we needed to continue development. We knew going in that most startups don’t make it, and as an indie game studio we hoped we would be the exception to that rule, but as it turned out we weren’t.”
The page also discusses refunds. Anyone who purchased the game is entitled for a full refund. Steam users can do so through the normal Steam refund process, while players who got the game from Indiegogo need to send an email with the necessary information.
Hero’s Song was initially funded through Kickstarter, but was cancelled shortly when it was able to raise only USD 137,000 in the first week, indicating that it would be able to reach its USD 800,000 funding goal.
