Fallout 4 Almost Had Multiplayer

Bethesda Softworks’ beloved open world RPGs are all solo affairs in the world that we know, and that’s by design. The dev team isn’t ignorant of the fact that some of its fans would like to explore vast fantasy landscapes with friends; the devs are just honest about what would and wouldn’t work within the context of their creative vision.

That doesn’t stop them from trying, however.

Fallout 4 director Todd Howard and his team sit down and figure out what multiplayer might look like for the game they’re working on. Pre-production is the best time to do that. Before anyone starts to do serious coding or content creation, concepts and mechanics are written down on paper and discussed. Multiplayer is always in the conversation at Bethesda.

“Then we go, ‘Yup, we shouldn’t do that. That’s an awesome idea that is way too distracting from the main thing we want to do, which is single player,'” Howard said matter-of-factly. “I could see ways it would work, but development-wise, they’re very different experiences.”

Gotta respect that creative vision. It certainly hasn’t hurt any of the Elder Scrolls or Fallout games to date. But this is still a fun little fact to spill out of the frequently secretive game development process.
