Epic Sues Man For A Fortnite Cheat That’s Actually A Bitcoin Miner

Fortnite’s Free-to-play Battle Royale mode came as a pleasant change for people who couldn’t get into PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. The game became popular soon enough, and has been attracting a wide audience since its release. Naturally, a portion of that audience is also comprised of cheaters and hackers looking to exploit the mechanics for a easy win.

Epic has retaliated over these cheats, taking several cheaters to court for copyright infringement. In a new lawsuit, the studio is targeting two cheaters who are promoting their hacks through YouTube. One of these is a Russian man, Mr Yakovenko whose cheat Epic downloaded themselves, but all they got was a Bitcoin Miner.

“Epic downloaded the purported cheat from the links provided in Yakovenko’s YouTube videos. While the ‘cheat’ does not appear to be a functional Fortnite cheat, it functions as a bitcoin miner that infects the user’s computer with a virus that causes the user’s computer to mine bitcoin for the benefit of an unknown third party,” the complaint reads.

The cheat itself doesn’t seem to do anything in the game, still Epic’s point stands as they refer to a YouTube video where he gives instructions on how to download and install the cheat.  “The First Yakovenko video and associated post contained instructions on how to download and install the cheat and showed full screen gameplay using the purported cheat,” the complaint reads.

All the videos corresponding to the above have been removed from YouTube following takedown notices from Epic Games. The complaint also accuses these men of trademark infringement, unfair competition and breach of contract.

Epic is definitely trying to tighten its grip on hackers, but still thousands of links and videos regarding Fortnite cheats and hacks continue to be added everyday. You can read the full complaint against Yakovenko here.
