The rise of artificial intelligence has been a real phenomenon over the last few years, and this latest AI developed by OpenAI, a team funded by Elon Musk himself, shows how far ahead the technology has come. During the recent DOTA 2 Internationals, the team brought out to the stage the AI and pitted it against Dendi, a top DOTA 2 pro-player. Over the course of the match, the AI adapted to his play-style and executed complex maneuvers, eventually beating the pros at their own game.
What’s impressive about this is that it’s not the same as a bot in the game beating the player. Bots are designed specifically for the game, and behave in predictable ways. AI learns and then applies what it has learned in the most efficient manner. OpenAI’s AI was given the game just two weeks prior, and over this period it played against itself over and over again, improving its techniques and coming up with counters to every strategy. And because of its fast learning capacity, those two weeks are comparable to lifetimes of practice for a human player.
This match was a one vs one match, and the OpenAI team intends to have it’s AI ready to match up against a team of five players by the next year. DOTA 2 is an incredibly complex game, and the AI’s ability to learn the ropes so quickly is nothing short of astounding.
