Samsung Galaxy S8+ Review

Remember when we were kids, we used to connect two cups with a string and talked over it? Well, that was an actual means of communication back in the day in the mid 1600s until 1876, when Alexander Graham Bell invented the first telephone. An archaic device that did it’s job. Over the years, technology has evolved and now we have if not the best, one of the best smartphones of 2017, the Samsung Galaxy S8+.

Boasting an “Infinity Screen” or an almost bezel-less phone, the Samsung Galaxy S8+ screams 2017, welcome to the future of Minority Report, hello Back to the Future. Back when I was younger, a dream of my friends and I, being science fiction fans, always wished we could watch TV on our phones, use the internet on our mobile phones and dare I say, maybe even play some games!

Well fast forward to 2017, wishes do come true and off the bat, the Samsung S8+’s biggest selling feature is the display, the design, and the lack of a bezel. The new Samsung phone comes with a 6.2” OLed display with an 18 and a half  9 display ratio making it a little bit taller than competing smartphones.

Even though the screen is so large, having next to no bezel, the phone ends up being as big as any other Smartphone in that range. Though the screen blending in with the body isn’t a new concept for Samsung, the screen does blend in with the body a lot more seamlessly than the previous Galaxy S7 Edge by replacing the physical home button with a soft on-screen pressure button.

With a lack of a physical home button, the fingerprint reader is placed on the back panel of the smartphone, right beside the camera lens. Personally, I prefer the fingerprint reader on the back of the phone which feels more natural when holding up the phone. The only problem being, since it’s a tall phone, the index finger doesn’t always naturally rest on the fingerprint reader but that’s a very minor issue with a phone that screams future tech. Even with an innovative design, Samsung does not sacrifice any features or functionality of the phone. It’s still thin enough has a USB Type C with fast charging, even has a headphone jack all at the bottom of the phone, still is IP68 water resistant, charges wirelessly and still comes with a micro SD slot to expand your external memory over the internal storage, 64GB being on this phone.

With all that, the Samsung Galaxy S8+ has some of the best specs a smartphone can have.

Coming with a Snapdragon 835 processor, 4GB RAM, Iris Scanner and the first phone with a Bluetooth 5.0 and all of this is powered by a 3500 MAh battery all under this sleek glass and metal body.

The camera on the S8+ seems to be similar to the previous S7 which doesn’t mean the camera is weak, the camera takes super crisp attractive pictures under the right lighting conditions. It comes with a 12MP back camera with an Aperture of f1.7 and optical image stabilization.

Coming to the software, the Samsung S8+ runs it’s own Samsung UI on the Android 7.0 with all their unique icons and a set of new wallpapers which makes the phone look even better and the UI runs smoothly on the Android 7.0.

The biggest software addition for the S8+ is it’s own assistant called Bixby. Bixby does pretty much everything the Google Assistant does but is powered by Samsung. Similar to the Google Assistant, it will give you relevant cards and news depending on your preference and keep notes and undertakes commands it’s told. Samsung even gives the phone it’s own Bixby button just below the volume button on the left of the phone. The funny thing with Bixby is that since the phone is running on Android 7.0, if you hold down the home button, the Google Assistant will pop up which I guess gives you an option to choose which assistant you want to use.

The Samsung S8+ boasts a screen resolution of 2220×1080 leading to a very crisp and satisfying viewing experience. Infact there is a button near the bottom of the phone which will let you expand the video to fit the screen properly if you don’t like that empty black patches on either side of the screen. The battery seems to last quite long even while watching videos on YouTube or if you’re watching something on Netflix. Since the phone does have 4GB of RAM and a powerful battery, it can easily run any android game you want to play. And along with a brightly lit screen, the phone is very usable outdoors as well.

Overall, the Samsung S8+ is a huge upgrade from the previous S7 and pretty impressive. You can tell that Samsung went all out with this phone. From the design to the software to the hardware, Samsung has pushed the boundaries and it shows. To end, I’m pretty happy using this phone and pleasantly surprised with the viewing experience it has. And there you go, that’s pretty much all you need to know about this phone.

The Samsung S8+ is priced at Rs. 64,900 and is available on the Samsung India Online store.
