Until now, EA had been a naysayer when it came to remastering games, sometimes even speaking against the whole practice. In 2015, Peter Moore had described the company as one “that just likes to push forward,” adding that remastering games “feels like pushing stuff out because you’ve run out of ideas. Well, that may just change in the future, and for the better as it may start with a remaster of Mass Effect titles.
EA Studios’ Patrick Soderlund spoke about this in detail to GameInformer at Gamescom. When asked if anything had changed regarding their mindset about remasters, like the Mass Effect trilogy for instance, he said, “What’s changed is that there is proof in the market that people want it, maybe more than there was when we spoke (back in 2015). There were some that did it before, but I think there is even more clear evidence that this is something that people really want.”
“The honest answer is that we are absolutely actively looking at it,” Soderlund continued to say. “I can’t announce anything today, but you can expect us most likely to follow our fellow partners in Activision and other companies that have done this successfully.”
One thing that he highlighted was probably choosing the right brand at the right time. He went on to add, “A remaster is something that you can just do or do it really well. I want to make sure that if we were to do it, we would do it really well and that people feel that it’s the same game but it feels so much better in this new shape and form.”
While this cannot be regarded as confirmation of a Mass Effect remaster, it still seems possible that the studio may be considering. And taking into account the massive success of the trilogy and the the fact that the next Mass Effect title is already quite hyped up, this may not turn out to be such a bad decision after all. In either case, we look forward to the release of Mass Effect: Andromeda.
