After the success of the latest GTX cards by NVIDIA, everyone had been expectantly waiting for the aftermarket cards. And here we are with a review of the Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 1070 graphics card. Before we get actually dive into it, take a look at the specifications.
The GPU looks great, and comes factory customized with the Windforce 3X with blade fan design, resulting in much better cooling than the founder’s edition. The simple colour scheme which has just a dab of orange, seems to go with any build design you may be considering. It comprises of three 80 mm fans, with a little triangle shape on each blade. Gigabyte calls these 3D active fans and claims that they increase the air flow over the traditional fans by 23%.

As opposed to the blower style cooling in the Founder’s edition, the G1 Gaming GTX 1070 employs an open air cooling system that makes it ideal for bigger cases with high airflow, as the openings in the card will make the air flow out, which may add to the overall heat of the cabinet.
Gigabyte went with the full RGB setting for the backlit logo, giving the user freedom to customize it as per they preferences. One fascinating thing, however is the backlit FAN STOP sign. These days, the GPUs power their fans down when they’re not under heavy load. In order to make sure that there isn’t any confusion regarding the working of the card when the fans are powered down, the sign lights up in order to let you know that the fans aren’t being used.
The G1 Gaming GTX 1070 uses a traditional 8-pin power connection, similar to the other 1070 models. This leaves room for overclocking as well. The card achieves a boost speed of 1822 MHz and base speed 1620 MHz when overclocked.
The GPU offers the same display options as the Founder’s Edition. There are three DisplayPorts, one DVI port and one HDMI port. The back features a monolithic full-length backplate with a Gigabyte logo printed on it. The backplate is devoid of any air vents, which may have an effect on cooling.
When idle, the graphic card sits at a cool 37 degrees. The highest temperature recorded by the card stabilized at about 68 degrees under heavy gaming.
Talking about the benchmark numbers, the card is impressive. All the titles were tested on max quality at 1440p for optimal gaming experience for this GPU. DOOM ran at an average of about 102 FPS, FarCry Primal at 68 FPS, Anno 2205 at 73 FPS and Rise of the Tomb Raider at 75 FPS.
All in all, the card meets most of our expectations and forms a worthy successor to the GTX 970. For those looking for a powerful card but don’t have the money for a 1080, the Gigabyte GTX 1070 G1 Gaming is quite an impressive substitute.
