Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice Review

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice Review

The movie trailer did a fine job deceiving you by cutting short dialogues in a way that make you presume that the movie is dumb and there wouldn’t be substance that can elevate the movie above what you have already seen in the trailer.

Take for example the cheesy ideological dialogue from Martha Kent in the trailer

“Be their hero bla..bla..”

The real dialogue is “be their hero bla..bla…. Or just don’t be, you don’t owe nobody no shit nigga!”(I don’t remember the exact words….but that’s the only way how I can paraphrase it in my mind (;p))

Or take for example in the trailer the ‘1 percent chance’ dialogue that seems over the top, it actually was spoken with more poise and a well defined reason in that same argument. Bats had seen good guys turn bad in his past 20 years of crime fighting experience. I couldn’t help but relate it to the Harvey dent incident in Christopher Nolan franchise. The Bats’ back story could well be similar to the one in the previous flicks. There is even that burnt down mansion and the hint that Bats has actually come out of a retirement, since people call him devil or the Bat vigilante and not Batman, even Sups said to him that the Bats is dead and it should remain that way.

Alfred is the best side-kick I have seen in years to assist Batman, effortlessly making you feel that there is no need for Robin or The Oracle to give Batman his needed back-up support. I liked the chemistry even more with Bruce Wayne preparing coffee for him and the butler’s cynical remark that Bruce’s alter ego did a better job of being a detective and collecting info,  than Bats who could hardly unearth anything even after beating up six hardcore criminals.

I had assumed that casting Gal Gadot and Jesse Eisenberg would most certainly be a letdown. However, I must admit that my favorites for the roles, Cobie Smulders/Gina Carano and Michael Rosenbaum, could not have done a better job as the selected cast did.

The reason? I have seen Cobie in Avengers and she neither has the physique (including the missing boobs on Gal Gadot) nor does she have that presence to stand toe to toe with better actors surrounding her. Even with her princess like face, she would have lacked that much-needed ferocity Wonder Woman is supposed to display. Gina Carano sure does have a boob advantage over Gal Gadot, but the gal was nevertheless fantastic in the action scenes, and with that smart ass look on her face, tall figure, long sexy legs and an overwhelming presence among the other two macho dudes she got the job done right, even though she had a considerably smaller screen time than Bats and Sups.

I am a Michael fan down to the bottom of my heart for his portrayal of Lex in the Smallville series. But one cannot deny that he has more of an anti hero vibe about him rather than a wretched villain. He can be a heroic Superman arch nemesis at best, but can never assume a personality rotten to the core. The audience will still find hope in him to break away from the grips of the dark side of the force. He is definitely incapable of portraying a wicked, shrewd, cocky and downright lunatic character. Even if he could, having seen him in Smallville, it would still be a long shot considering that the movie is 3 hours long and it took ten fucking years packed with tragedies for him to break that heroic charisma to achieve his satanic transformation.

I just can’t imagine him as Lex acting irresponsibly just because he would get pissed about an almighty god like figure suddenly appearing out of the blue sky and making mankind feel insignificant. Jessie on the other hand was everything the script demanded. Smart-ass-manipulative-cocky-bastard right from the start, and psychotic as correctly suggested by Miss Lane in the movie. At this point you may throw at me some other names of actors who could play the parts, but seriously man! You cannot argue about someone who you just think would play the part better, comparing with someone who actually pulled it off in the actual movie. Besides, the movie does suggest that he is portraying Lex jr. since the company was named after his father, just as previously speculated.

For me even the choice of Lois Lane was a disaster up until now. But the fact is that I had captured that gloomy and annoying feel about her largely because of her previous movies. If you analyze logically Superman is in fact more likely to be attracted to someone with average looks, strong sense of morality, humbleness and that charm of an elderly woman. If the part could go to someone else, in my opinion Sushmita Sen would be the next best choice.

The inclusion of Doomsday in the trailer appeared as an unnecessary part in the plot just to have some crazy shit action scenes. However, in the movie it was more of a desperate move from Lex, who was deprived of the chance to kill Sups, since Bats stole his kryptonite. And he didn’t kill Sups, even after all that confusion Lex had cleverly created around him. Moreover, it was a perfect opportunity for dragging out Wonder Woman, who shouldn’t logically come out of the shadows unless a bigger threat than general Zod appears. Why else does she have to take the burden when she didn’t feel it was necessary in the Man of Steel incident?

How does the movie answer the biggest and most relevant question of all times, that also happens to be the crux of the movie Superman vs. batman, “Does Bat really has any chance against Sups in a head on collision?”

The answer this movie gives is the best there could be. One, Bats had ancestors (according to the movie) who were natural born hunters and the legacy lives in Bats’ blood. You piss him off and he cannot but repay the kindness hunter-style. Second, Sups is not motivated to kill Bats, but rather wants to subdue him in order to end the animosity and work together (so no lethal moves from Sups’ side). Third, the Bats’ hunter tactics, his armor and all those traps are still not enough to bring down even an unmotivated Sups unless you unfailingly deploy kryptonite.

All those critics disapproving the movie can kiss my ass. They don’t even have a common consensus if you ask them what exactly is wrong about the movie. Some would say its Lex and WW, others would point fingers at Sups and Bats. As a matter of fact, when I saw the movie and found that the movie was awesome, for a second I was a little skeptical about myself due to all the negative media reaction I was witnessing until yesterday. But, towards the end of the movie in the movie theatre, a kid actually started crying to the max of his vocal capacity without shame. It was as if it was his grandma who died and not XXX. He almost made me remember my feelings for that poor John Connor kid from the T2, when the t800 Cyborg drowns himself in molten metal. This is the testimony to the fact that the movie is actually awesome if you are not already swayed by all that negative media inanity.

I would even give the movie extra brownie points due to four reasons. One, the perfect choice for Thomas Wayne, played by Jeffrey d Morgan. He would be perfect if you make a spin off about him being Batman in alternate reality, as it happens in the comics. Two, suggesting with the appearance of Flash trapped in some inter-dimensional anomaly that the nuked city dream sequence could be an alternate reality similar to the plot in Injustice: Gods Among Us video game. Third, showcasing the kryptonite spear designed to kill Sups from the DC Online trailer. Fourth, Bats in the movie is absolutely ruthless, and the look and feel closely matches the ‘Dark Knight Returns’ Batman. And mind it, this Bruce Wayne doesn’t unnecessarily hold pretense by flirting with the chicks, he actually gets them to his bed (;p).
