Bethesda Softworks’ beloved open world RPGs are all solo affairs in the world that we know, and that’s by design. The dev team isn’t ignorant of the fact that some of its fans would like to explore vast fantasy landscapes with friends; the devs are just honest about what would and wouldn’t work within the context of their creative vision. That doesn’t stop them from trying, however. Fallout 4 director Todd Howard and his team sit down and figure out what multiplayer might look like for the game they’re working on. Pre-production is the best time to do that. Before anyone starts to do serious coding or content creation, concepts and mechanics are written down on paper and discussed. Multiplayer is always in the conversation at Bethesda. “Then we go,...

Developer The Coalition and its studio head Rod Ferguson are at E3 talking about the importance of establishing their Gears of War bonafides with the finally-confirmed Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. But in a behind closed doors info session on the game this week, there were indications that Ferguson and co. have plans to lay longer term groundwork for the series with the multiplayer community. Among bullet points about resolutions and framerates and map counts, a few things stuck out to me in particular. First, that Gears of War: Ultimate Edition will include a spectator feature for multiplayer matches, a de facto requirement for proper “casting” — i.e., for commentators to direct view of the action and make play-by-play analysis of matches in a live capacity. Second, Gears of...
Bethesda has officially revealed Fallout 4, the newest entry in its open-world RPG series, which is set to ship on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. The game’s official website went live slightly ahead of schedule, showing box art for the title and also confirming it will not be released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. As previously indicated, Fallout 4 will take place in Boston. During the video we are briefly shown an area called “Scollay Square,” which is located in real-world Boston. The USS Constitution, which is docked in the city, Bunker Hill Monument, and the Massachusetts State House are also seen in the video. The entrance to Vault 111 is also briefly shown. It is likely this is where players will journey into the wasteland from. Bethesda Game Studios’ Todd ...

Need for Speed, the new Ghost Games developed title, will have integral components that rely on an internet connection. Answering a fan inquiry on Twitter, the game’s official account said that the benefits of having an internet connection is “more variety and a more rewarding experience with friends.” Before later elaborating that being connected will “allow your friends to be part of your narrative experience, something only possible through connected play.” That comment is interesting when you look at the way Rivals handled it. That game too required an internet connection, but populated the world with AI players whenever the connection would drop. Need for Speed Rivals’ AllDrive system will return. It will be an improved version and will feature dedicated servers. Despite the online co...

Playtonic Games have been humbled by the support behind their Kickstarter campaign for Yooka-Laylee, touted as a spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie. It only took 40 minutes to surpass it, an achievement that has seen the crowdfunding website confirm that it has become the “Most Funded UK campaign ever for a video game.” It not only eclipsed Frontier Developments’ Elite: Dangerous, but can also claim to be the fastest game project to have reached $1 million. That was accomplished in 5 hours and 41 minutes, which has only been outpaced by four other projects. “The response to Yooka-Laylee has been incredible and from all of us here at Playtonic, we really want to say a huge, warm ‘thank you’ to eve...
Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 owners were dealt with the biggest blow to date. Just days ago, Ubisoft Games announced that they are done developing games for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles. Several outlets have reported the news, including Forbes. Ubisoft will be releasing all of their games, including the critically acclaimed Assassin’s Creed series exclusively for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. The only game that Ubisoft will develop for the last generation consoles is the Just Dance series. What that means for owners of the Xbox 360 and PS3 is that they will have to upgrade their gaming systems if they want the latest Assassin’s Creed game release. Ubisoft is also behind the “Far Cry”, “Watch Dogs” and “AC” series.
