Blizzard revealed the latest Overwatch animated short at Gamescom, focused on Mei, the ice-wielding climatologist. Titled as ‘Rise and Shine’, this is the seventh animated short the game has received. This 10 minute long animated video gives the players a better look at Mei’s backstory, who had been frozen cryogenically while doing research in Antarctica before returning to the Overwatch organization. Even though the game doesn’t have a story mode, Blizzard does an impeccable job of providing the heroes with a rich and sometimes emotional background in the form of these animated shorts, and the quality is top-notch, easily comparable to something made by a studio like Pixar. New Overwatch Animated Shorts Incoming
For those who don’t know, Overwatch animated shorts are story based trailers that tell the characters’ background stories, giving them additional depth. And for fans of the game, it gets better, more of these are on the way. According to Polygon, Director Jeff Kaplan revealed that a second season of the animated shorts is in the making, with the production being well underway. “The animated shorts are probably the thing that we have the most fun making,” Kaplan said. “We really love working with our animation group and digging out the stories not tied to any constraints of gameplay—we can tell any stories we want”.
