Simple Spy is a precision platformer by an Indian studio called Kodari Games. It is available on the PC (Steam), iOS and Android platforms. Developed by a two member team, this game is easy to get into, hard to master and sometimes straight up frustrating. Don’t get us wrong, that’s what we like about the game.
The game combines excellent music, simple menu designs with minimalist aesthetics and hardcore gameplay. There are over 60 levels to master, each more difficult that the previous one, and you can choose from different characters. But there’s a lot more to it than meets the eye. Once you actually get into the game, you realize that it is harder than it seems to be.
As you jump, roll and climb walls making your way around the obstacles, the precision element of the game certainly jumps into focus. You can’t press the jump key or any movement key for too long, and you need to be quick on your fingers to successfully get through to the end of the level. The obstacles are fun too. Giant saws popping from the floors and walls, lasers shooting to block your way and platforms that can kill you with a single change of colour – Simple Spy stops at nothing to stop you from succeeding, making it really challenging and fun.
Talking about the music and looks, the game feels great. It features a sort of upbeat, sci-fi inspired music that goes perfectly with the design and aesthetics of the game. The minimalist, simple approach to the visual design of the game comes as a fresh change, as a lot of games, even in the smartphone market focus on high-end graphics. Needless to say, the complete 2D approach works as a huge success for the game.
Simple Spy, in addition to being a great game in itself, is a perfect example of the talent and potential Indian game developers hold. It is an untapped mine, which only needs the right opportunity to shine. We highly recommend you to try this game at least once, because you’ll definitely keep coming back to it. Simple Spy is available on Steam for INR 119.
