Warhammer Chaosbane – Review

Warhammer Chaosbane is a Diablo-esque ARPG with a ton of loot, enemies, skills and bosses. It has an immensely fun moment-to-moment combat loop, be it playing solo or with friends. The combat is chaotic, the loot is rewarding, and everything scales up nicely with the difficulty. The story is skippable, and so is most of the voice acting, but you’re here to click for blood, and the clickin’s good! The game also looks nice, specially with lot of enemies and skills at play on screen. Pros: Fun boss battles Lots of loot Varied classes Cons: Terrible Story Buggy on PC Not enough content Score – 7/10 About: In a world ravaged by war and dominated by magic, you are the last hope for the Empire of Man against the Chaos hordes. Playing solo or with up to 4 in local or online co-op...

Deep Sky Derelicts – Review

Deep Sky Derelicts is a turn based strategy where where you build a team of three, with various class and accompanying skills and abilities. You are tasked with finding The Mothership, which is said to contain technology beyond imagination. From there on you set out to explore various ships in space, encountering enemies, finding loot and so on. The art and atmosphere are brilliant, and make for a good sense of dread and foreboding. Comparisons to Darkest Dungeon are not to far off, and the game is similarly stylized. Pros: Neat comic-book style visuals Interesting gameplay loop Great atmosphere Cons: Dull story Classes need more polish Score – 7/10 About: In a grim dystopian future, where mankind has scattered across the galaxy and the human society has split into two distinct class...

Layers of Fear 2 – Review

Layers of Fear 2 uses the strongest elements of interactive story telling to immerse you in a horrifying experience – atmosphere and playing with perspective. Add to that a compelling narrative, and Layers of Fear kept me going even when I wanted to quit out of sheer terror and tension. You start as an actor on board an ocean liner, and are then tasked with exploring the space, discovering the stories of other characters and your own story. What makes Layers of Fear 2’s horror elements different are the ways in which it plays with perspective. You could be walking along a hallway, and turn the camera around and find yourself in a different scene entirely. And all of this is boosted with strange surrealism that can often get under the skin. However, it is also visually stunning....

Observation – Review

Observation is set on a space station which has apparently lost contact with home base. You wake up and have to figure out what exactly has gone wrong, and your only help is the onboard AI – SAM. The twist – SAM might not be completely open with you about the nature of your mission and the trip. Also, the story is told via the lens of the AI, so you will be controlling it for the most part. This is one of the most interesting game I played this year and the aesthetic is what sold most of it for me. The sci-fi nature of the plot, the design of the ship, and the interfaces you interact with are all really well done. The AI has an operating system that you use fairly frequently to inspect various parts of the space ship. You also use it to unlock doors, read logs, solve puzzles, a...

Ape Out – Review

Imagine Hotline Miami, only you’re an ape escaping from confinement. Sound good? Well, that’s what Ape Out is all about – you smash your way through levels, destroying anyone in your way, and have a blast doing it. It’s a fun smash em’ up with a minimalist art style. Since you are an ape, there’s not a lot of weapons at your disposal. However, you can use your enemies as weapons by throwing them at other enemies, and even use them as shields. The game is played from a top-down perspective, and you need to navigate maze like levels to find the exit. There will be traps and obstacles along the way, and this is where you apply your gray matter – which hopefully is more evolved than that belonging to the ape you are controlling. Also, the soundtrack is ...

It’s Magic! : Mages of Mystralia Review

No matter how much you need to rely on magic in a game, its use remains somewhat simple. You acquire a spell, you equip it and use it, mostly at the press of a button. But thanks to Mages of Mystralia, you get to create and modify every spell at your disposal. It relies on the fact that you are not an experience mage, and will learn your magic as you use it, giving you control over every single component of the spell, right down to its element. In Mages of Mystralia, you play as a young woman named Zia who has just discovered that she has an affinity towards magic. Untrained and unable to control her fire spells, she wreaks havoc on her village and is forced to leave. After all, Mystralia is a land that frowns upon the use of magic. Taken in by a mentor and the order of mages, she has to m...
