Western Digital, the American data storage company unveiled a new line of Solid State Drives utilising the NVMe technology. These drives promise higher throughputs as compared to the ubiquitous SATA drives. The new SSD range comprises of the WD Black SN750 NVMe and the WD Blue SN500 NVMe. The Black version is aimed at gamers and creative professionals with capacities of upto 2 TB. The Blue version is for more mainstream users who want a more efficient and faster computing experience. All variants of the WD Black SN750 NVMe SSD are available at Amazon and WD’s network of over 1000 channel partners.
To put into perspective just how fast these new NVMe SSDs will be, compare the read write speeds to those of a HDD or even SATA drives. HDDs max out at around 160 MB/s while SATA SSDs deliver a performance of over 540 MB/s. The new NVMe SSDs ( SN750 ) max out at 3470 MB/s, that is 3 times the speed of a SATA SSD and over 20 times of those of HDDs.
The SSDs are built on Western Digital’s proprietary 3D NAND technology which allows capacities of up to 2 TB in the same M.2 form factor with some versions even incorporating a heat sink for good measure. The heat sink would maintain temperature and prevent throttling.
The NVMe technology enables up to 515,000 random-read and 560,000 random write Input Output Operations per Second ( for the 1TB model ) for extreme throughputs enabling the SSD to work with multi-threaded applications with ease. The feature of multiple parallel processes allowed by the NVMe interface ( as compared to SATA ) also enable the SSD to work in data intensive environments with minimal wait times where before it would’ve been the bottleneck. All of these together promise to provide a much more seamless gaming experience with decreased load times and faster installations.
The WD Black SN750 NVMe will also come with an exclusive on-board software to tweak performance and enable a gaming mode which will stop the SSD from going into low power state and reduce latency. It’ll have a new look and feel which will be unique to the WD Black series.
