Independence Day is upon us, and as gamers we’d be amiss if we didn’t take the opportunity to celebrate the Indian developers who work so hard to bring us joy and entertainment. Even though game development in India isn’t considered to be the best, that doesn’t stop these studios from working hard and following their passion. As a result, they have produced some absolutely stunning gems. Here’s our pick for the top 5 games that were made in India:
1. Asura
- Platform: Windows PC, MacOS
- Developer: Ogre Head Studio
A hack-n-slash RPG where not only the level, but even your abilities are procedurally generated, Asura is a absolute delight to play. You play as the demon incarnation of a little kid who was sacrificed, looking for revenge. The game doesn’t have the best graphics, but the gameplay and combat is extremely tight and satisfying. Not to mention that it doesn’t shy away from kicking your butt back to hell. It draws heavy inspiration from Hindu mythology and all the characters and items have Indian names. There’s plenty of replay-ability value with procedural generation, and every time you play it, you experience it differently.
2. Stay, Mum
- Platform: iOS
- Developer: Lucid Labs
If you think that video games can’t have an emotional impact on you, think again. Stay Mum, explores the relationship of a son and his struggling mother. The game revolves around John, his wild imagination and his mum, who is kept busy at work to support herself and John. While Mum is at work, John is at home with the blocs she left behind to cure his loneliness. With great aesthetics and a creative story, this game is a must-play.
3. Lovely Planet
- Platform: PC
- Developer: QUICKTEQUILA
In the words of a well put Steam review about this game – “The friendliest, most adorable middle finger” you’ve ever been given. The game looks fairly simple (not to mention incredibly cute and quirky), you have a gun, and you need to shoot things and get to the end point. Also, you may die at least a hundred times on your way. Think of Super Meat Boy as an FPS, and you can begin to think what we’re talking about.
4. Scribbled Arena
- Platform: PC
- Developer: Apar Games
You know what’s better than blowing up your friends in tanks? Blowing them up in hand doodled tanks. Bring out your squad on paper, and have at it. Intense multiplayer battles, fast action and explosive gameplay, Scribbled Arena has it all. This game is an innovative an extremely fun take on the twin-stick shooter genre.
5. Unrest
- Platform: PC
- Developer: Pyrodactyl Games
Unrest is an RPG set in fantasy representation of an ancient Indian city. You play as multiple characters, each with their own motives, their own sets of problems and ambitions. The driving force behind the game is its compelling narrative and dialogue, dealing with several themes that are characteristic of our country, such as the caste system and the consequent discrimination.
