“We Don’t Believe in DRM” – Shadow Warrior 2 Developer

According to Kotaku, the devs behind Shadow Warrior 2 believe that anti-piracy technology will actually end up making their game worse.

When asked about the new game’s lack of anti-piracy measures, this is what they wrote: “We don’t believe in DRM, and we don’t like DRM.”

“We don’t believe it works.Nor that it’s good for the players,” said Artur Maskara and Tadeusz Zielinski, both of whom manage PR for the game’s studio, Flying Wild Hog. Recently, their colleague Krzysztof “KriS” Narkowicz had stated that the studio chose not to go for Denuvo, because it would make their game worse for the players.

This is what Kris said when a game asked about the game’s protective measures against piracy on launch, “We don’t support piracy, but currently there isn’t a good way to stop it without hurting our customers. Denuvo means we would have to spend money for making a worse version for our legit customers. It’s like this FBI warning screen on legit movies.”

It may not be clear how implementing anti-piracy tech would end up degrading the quality of the game, but the devs at Flying Wild Hog believe that it would trade off for time they could spend making their game better. “Any DRM we would have needs to be implemented and tested,” KriS explained to Kotaku. “We prefer to spend resources on making our game the best possible in terms of quality, rather than spending time and money on putting some protection that will not work anyway.”

Currently, the effectiveness of Denuvo seems to be under question as some pirates have claimed to crack the DRM, with some copies of games like Rise of the Tomb Raider and DOOM being found cracked online. However, it has taken them a good amount of time, which ensured legit sales of the games during the initial launch phase.

Shadow Warrior 2 was released on Steam on 13th October, and is planned to be released on consoles next year.
