Following up 2017’s homage to Banjo-Kazooie, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is inspired by Donkey Kong Country, and it is so damn good. It completely lives up to expectations, and is a worthy sequel in many ways.
Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair opens with a fast paced and vibrant platforming segment that leads directly to the Impossible Lair, an incredibly tough level which is also the final level of the game. It’s available from the start, but given the difficulty, you’ll probably die real fast. You then spend the rest of the game improving your skills, going across various levels, and gather more hit points which can help you survive the Impossible Lair, and take down the nefarious Captain B.
The platforming is really tight, and the level design is both clever and gorgeous. Bright colored visuals greet you at every step, and the music just drives the whole tone of the game really well. This is easily one of the best platformers I have played in recent memory, and Playtonic truly have a hit on their hands.
The puzzles are also really well done, and you keep unlock new power-ups, like ice or fire bombs, that help you both in combat, and in figuring out the puzzles in the levels. Speaking of levels, there are also alternate versions of levels that change up the entire look and flow of the level, and it’s really impressive.
Overall, I am having a blast with Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a fun, yet challenging platformer.

Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is a brand-new platform adventure from some of the key creative talent behind ‘Donkey Kong Country’. With their arch-nemesis Capital B up to no good, the buddy duo needs to spring into action once again to save the day. To thwart his evil plan of using a “Hivemind” device to enslave an entire kingdom of bees, our heroes need to take the fight to Capital B’s “Impossible” Lair. Things look tough, but with the help of Queen Phoebee and her Royal Beetallion , Yooka and Laylee might just have a chance!
