Title for “Best-Selling New Franchise” goes to Watch Dogs

Many saw this coming and they were right as Ubisoft worked out the numbers and announced that their latest title set a record for the best new franchise launch in history with 4 million in sell-through in week one. And it goes without saying that Watch Dogs is Ubisoft’s best selling launch ever which increases the chances of a sequel.

“With such strong sales momentum and positive feedback from gamers, Watch Dogs has positioned itself as the must-have game of the moment” said Ubisoft’s senior vice president of sales and marketing, Tony Key. “We’re really proud of this achievement, and are confident that the Watch Dogs brand has a promising future.”

In hindsight, Ubisofts delay with Watch Dogs was perhaps a good decision, as it’s good news not only for Ubisoft but for the industry as a whole. Watch Dogs was available on previous gen systems and PC, but its main target audience lay in the Xbox One and PS4 gamers. Watch Dogs was meant to be a launch game for the current-gen, but Ubisoft delayed the release for development reasons. As these numbers show, that was probably the right move.
