No Man’s Sky Accused Of Using Patented Equation Without Permission

Only a month before it’s launch, No Man’s Sky in the news again, this time under the accusation of using a patented equation without the permission of the owner. Telegraaf reported that a Dutch company by the name of Genicap owns the “Superformula” used by the game for procedural generation of its 18 bazillion or so planets, for which the developer Hello Games did not obtain the licenses. “We haven’t provided a license to Hello Games,” Jeroen Sparrow of Genicap said. “We don’t want to stop the launch, but if the formula is used we’ll need to have a talk.” Genicap hasn’t seen No Man’s Sky’s source yet, so the validity of the claims cannot be verified yet. No Man’s Sky Launching On June 21st

The much awaited No Man’s Sky is being released on 21st June for PC and PS4 as confirmed by Hello Games. Beyond that they have also announced that the PC version of No Man’s Sky will receive a collectible Explorer’s Edition limited to 10,000 copies. The Explorer’s Edition will include a code for a digital copy of the game as well a replica of the hand-painted 8-inch ship. No Man’s Sky To Take You 5 Billion Years To Explore

Creators of  No Man’s Sky weren’t fooling around when they revealed that every aspect of their massive space exploration game was procedurally generated. To add to that, cofounder of Hello Games Sean Murray said that the total number of planets generated makes visiting them all virtually impossible–unless you can continuously respawn for 5 billion years. In an interview with IGN, Murray revealed that the team had been using a 32-bit number to help code for every planet in the in-game universe. This created a total that would take around 5,000 years to see in its entirety, but they seems unhappy with this level of depth and detail–so decided to make it a 64-bit set up.
