AMD Refreshes Their APU Lineup with the A8-7870K

AMD launched the A8-7670K APU in their Godavari line of APUs, featuring native Windows 10 support and unparelleled performance at the budget. For the people not in the know, an APU combines a CPU and a proper GPU in one die. This APU has 10 computational cores: 4 CPU running up to 3.9GHz + 6 GPU running at 757MHz. The integrated GPU in this case is an unspecified Radeon R7 class GPU, which, while not on par with proper dedicated mid-range GPUs, outperforms embedded solutions by a country mile. An upscaled version of these APUs are most famously present in the Xbox One and PS4. The A8-7670k comes packed with all the Radeon goodies: AMD Eyefinity for multi-monitor setups, FreeSync, AMD’s Gaming Evolved, which allows game footage capturing and automatic game optimisation, Virtual Super ...

Nintendo is finally coming to Smartphones

his morning Nintendo announced a partnership with DeNA (pronounced “D-N-A”) to deliver new titles featuring Nintendo characters to “smart devices and bring a new multi-device membership service” to market worldwide. This is the news that Nintendo fans have been waiting the better part of a decade to hear. As our own Anthony Domanico put it in an editorial back in 2011, “Nintendo could single-handedly revolutionize Android gaming…but they don’t wanna.” Apparently the sheer size of the smartphone and tablet market has finally overwhelmed whatever concerns Nintendo had about cannibalizing its own hardware sales. It seems shocking that it took them this long to appreciate that position, considering it was back in 2011 that the tide turned and smartphone gaming first overtook the traditional ha...

NVIDIA’s Maxwell GPU’s will bring you closer to Virtual Reality Gaming

We’ve seen it in movies. We’re read about it in books. Virtual technology is breaking into the mainstream with NVIDIA’s latest GPUs – built on the new Maxwell architecture – are ready. Maxwell is at the core of the new GeForce GTX 980 and GTX 970 GPUs, the most advanced GPUs from NVIDIA.  Maxwell is designed to solve some of the most complex lighting and graphics challenges in visual computing. One of the biggest challenges: virtual reality. With screens positioned inches away from the user’s face, responsiveness is at a premium. Which is why Maxwell-based GPUs have been optimized for virtual reality. No margin for error: get VR wrong and gamers can get sick. Typically, it takes 50 milliseconds or more to render a scene in a virtual reality environment, from the time you move your he...

A Little Gaming Everyday Keeps The Doctor Away

Many people think video games all the time is a total and complete waste of time and cannot lead to anything productive, and at the risk of sounding completely nuts, to a certain extent, I do agree with these people. Now mark my words–“to a certain extent”. Too much of anything isn’t good, and sadly enough this applies to gaming too. Studies suggest that young people who spent less than an hour a day playing video games were better adjusted than those who did not play any at all. Don’t get overexcited, here is the downside. Children who played on their consoles for over three hours a day were said to have had  lower satisfaction with their lives overall. The research is published in the journal Pediatrics. Experimental psychologist Dr Andrew Przybylski analyse...

Valve Unleashes the Steam Controller

Valve came out with the final announcement of the week, with the Steam Controller. They seem to be set out with a singular goal: to bring the Steam experience, in its entirety, into the living-room. Here are the few brief highlights of the controller. Complete catalog The Steam Controller is designed to work with all the games on Steam: past, present, and future. Even the older titles in the catalog and the ones which were not built with controller support will can be played using this new controller. Superior performance Traditional gamepads force us to accept compromises. With a goal to improve upon the resolution and fidelity of input that’s possible with those devices, the Steam controller offers a new and, we believe, vastly superior control scheme. Steam claims the controller is just...

Titanfall gameplay preview

This year’s E3 gaming expo has made one thing clear… it’s that we’ve got some serious first person shooters in the pipeline. Titanfall looks to be one such title. In the same year as Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim gets a theatrical release, Titanfall certainly has its finger on the mecha-robot trend’s pulse. Play as a futuristic pilot shooter or gear up and dive into a giant mechanized suit known as a Titan. But you needn’t make that decision at the beginning of the game the  focus has been on seamless integration between one and the other during play. That’s Titanfall’s hook. As a pilot there are certain routes through levels or access points not reachable when suited up, while the inclusion of a jetpack gives plenty of wall-bouncing...
