New Update For DOOM Adds Vulkan Support

id Software has announced the availability for the Vulkan™ version of DOOM that relies on innovative features to deliver incredible performance. As you may already know, the Vulkan™ API is a descendant of AMD’s Mantle that supports close-to-metal control across Windows® 7, Windows® 8.1, Windows® 10, and Linux®. Compared to OpenGL, Vulkan™ substantially reduces “API overhead” – the background work a CPU does to interpret what a game asks of the hardware – to deliver meaningful features, performance, and image quality and expose GPU hardware features that wouldn’t ordinarily be accessible through OpenGL. DOOM benefits from Vulkan support by using several great features: Asynchronous Shaders Shader Intrinsics or Shader Intrinsic Functions Frame Flip Optimizations Here are a couple of performa...

DOOM Goes Old School With New Update

DOOM has been exhilarating for both old and new fans alike, and the first post launch update ensures that the hype train doesn’t slow down. In addition to introducing a Photo Mode for taking in-game screenshots, it brings back the original DOOM aiming style, with you gun placed  right in the center of the screen. It looks like this: Brings back some memories, doesn’t it? For those who don’t know (it’s hard to think of anyone), this is what the original DOOM looked like: Doesn’t seem very realistic, we know. But hey, you’re on a space station, shooting demons in the face, so what the heck. You know you love it. This setting can be enabled in the “weapons placement” section in the options and is available in all game modes. In addition to this,...

The Graphics Technology of Fallout 4

Close to the launch of their highly awaited title, Fallout 4, Bethesda discusses the graphics technology behind Fallout 4. This is what they say: The hardware we play games on continues to advance at a rapid pace with exciting new graphics features. Our Creation Engine has evolved to incorporate this new technology in order to empower the artists and designers at Bethesda Game Studios to create an immersive new world. The tech team here is closely aligned with the art team, and together we carefully selected each individual feature based on specific artistic and performance goals we wanted to achieve in creating this world. Paid Mods Coming Back for Fallout 4?

So Bethesda is planning to bring in paid mods back for Fallout 4. While the basic idea of, as Bethesda put it, “supporting modders for their work” is rather complex and has numerous pros and cons, the Skyrim community did NOT like it. There were flame wars and unending revolt until Bethesda and Valve cancelled it. What the community took the most offence with was the break-up of the revenue from mod sales: Bethesda got a meaty 45% of the whole sale (on top of the sale from the base game, which came out in 2011 and is still selling like hot cakes), Valve kept 30% (their usual cut from all sales on Steam) and modders got a rather measly 25% from their mod. Mind, 25% is the standard cut of the sales on the Steam Workshop. In an interview with GameSpot, Bethesda’s Peter Hines...

Fallout 4 Won’t Have Skyrim’s Technical Issues

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim launched in 2011 to critical acclaim, but players sometimes encountered bugs during their playthroughs. Developer Bethesda had trouble working with the PlayStation 3, specifically, having to deal with issues in the game that delayed DLC for the PS3 version for months. Bethesda has learned from the rough state of Skyrim, however, and is aiming to apply those lessons to the upcoming release of Fallout 4. According to a Game Informer interview with game director Todd Howard, the studio better understood how to deal with bugs and problems following the release of Skyrim and its subsequent DLC. Specifically, it learned what to prioritize for the launch of Fallout 4, should that game face similar issues. “I think we’ve gotten way better there,” he sa...

Fallout 4: Coming Soon?

Bethesda is rumoured to have hired Guillermo del Toro-helmed Mirada Studios to create a cinematic trailer for Fallout 4. Aren’t we all just starving for a huge open world post-apocalyptic game, and Fallout 4 could be just the thing to satiate that hunger!!
