How To Spot An “Incomplete” Video Game?

In the recent days, the trend to release complete and finished video games has diminished among the publishers, especially AAA publishers such as EA.

This process, as wicked as it may be, was fascinating; take a complete game and remove its key features to be sold later. Then rush the incomplete game to the market and hype it as much as possible. Fix it later via seasons passes and acquire more money.

This was, however, not always the case. When the developers were scarce and resources were plentiful, almost all of the games were complete. In the modern days, the tables seemed to have turned; developers are plentiful and resources are scarce. In such situations, releasing an incomplete game is the best way to acquire as much money as the consumer can spare. Pay-to-win has played a major role in making this wicked scheme a success.

Yet, even in these dark times, there are some games which offer mere enjoyment, whose publishers aren’t greedy. ‘Witcher 3’ is the best example of my words but Legend of ‘Zelda BOTW’, ‘Mario Odyssey’ and ‘Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice’ are rather more recent and relevant examples.

You can recognize if the game is complete or not by asking the following the questions-

  • Is the game manipulating me into spending more money?
  • Is this game wasting my time by diluting with filler content?
  • Is content recycled or reused during the game?
  • Have things have been taken out of the game for resale purposes?
  • Has the progression been tied off for the business’s sake?

If the answers to the above questions are ‘NO’, then it is safe to say that the game is complete.
