PS3 Games Running At 4K On PC Using This New Emulator

RPCS3, the PS3 emulator got an update recently, which shows how good the PS3 titles were originally meant to look. But due to the lack of processing power, it wasn’t possible at that time.

The new update adds some handy new features, including resolution scaling to improve the look of the games. It technically supports upto 10K resolution, but considering that the games made for the console were originally supposed to run at 720p, that’s a bit of overkill. You can check out the video below and see the enormous improvement after upscaling to 4K and adding 16x anisotropic filtering.

The best thing is, upscaling these older titles doesn’t even put a lot of load on your GPU. In a blog post, the RPCS3 explains that “anyone with a dedicated graphics card that has Vulkan support can expect identical performance at 4K.”

This is possible because a number of PS3 titles came with high-resolution assets on the disc, but then compressed those textures for faster processing. However, that isn’t the case anymore when you run the game on the emulator, and as seen in the video, it is actually possible to play the games in all their glory.

Towards the end of the blog post, the RPCS3 team says, “High resolution rendering is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to improving graphics quality. In the future, we will see custom anti-aliasing, texture scaling algorithms, and maybe even game specific patches by the community. Of course, work also continues with improving the emulator accuracy and general performance to enable more games to run, and to run well. As of last month, RPCS3 now has two full-time coders that greatly benefit from the continued support of over 600 generous patrons.”
