Did The Squad Pick The Right Members? :: Suicide Squad Review

Did The Squad Pick The Right Members? :: Suicide Squad Review

At the onset of this article, I would like to say that this movie is a wonderful amalgam of quirky humor, heart-warming emotions, phenomenal cinematography, respectable acting, amazing character design and craftily planted music score that pretty much nails the movie watching experience of a typical super-hero movie fan. So, nothing in this review should prevent you from making it a blockbuster this year.

As for the review part, let me get down and spill it for you in pieces.

The Joker:

Ok, it’s like the movie makers brainstormed and after a lot of thinking; they concluded that they cannot beat the Heath ledger version, so just FUCK IT! Keep the concept around Joker simple and straight forward. He is a typical intelligent and resourceful organized-crime boss with a wacky style quotient. When you look at him you don’t get intrigued about what’s going inside his mind or what’s his back story.

You see him on screen and you know that he will just get down to business without any room in his act for philosophical shit, evil humor and mind boggling ideological insights that can sweep the floor under you. So basically, unlike the case with Heath ledger, you cannot expect the market to flood with mind jolting posters and wallpapers with Jared Leto. This version is also different in the way the joker treats Harley Quinn.

In most other versions, the Joker is never emotionally attached to her ever so clearly. The situation had always been similar to as if a sadistic person, who throws shit at everybody in the world, is followed around by a loyal puppy that assumes, rightly or wrongly, that his master loves it. The duo in this movie is more akin to the couple in the movie “Mr. Right”, two wackadoos who are so in love. But somehow, I don’t know why, I am not against him showing up in other possible follow up movies. Which is great! Since I never expected me to get over Heath Ledger’s act as the Joker.

Deadshot:

I would say it is more of a lost opportunity I see with the treatment they did with this particular character. There is nothing you can complain about Will Smith, but at the end of the day Will Smith just played more of Will Smith and less of the character Deadshot. Nothing here will make you a fan of Deadshot.

After the movie, you just remain a fan of Will Smith as you come out of the movie; and that’s that. The character showed potential in the practice round when he faces the assessment test for the team, but nothing fancy happened with his ability on the field. No hard targets and no extraordinaire feats with the guns you saw in movies such as “Wanted” and “Shoot em up”.

Harley Quinn:

You liked Margot Robbie in the trailers; you will like her in the movie too. What more were you expecting anyways?

Other Squad Members:

Likewise, they played their part well, but nothing extraordinaire came out of them that would make you fall in love with them.

Amanda Waller:

Impressive, but nothing I haven’t already seen before. For those who watch the “Suits” TV series, can just imagine a character similar to Jessica Pearson playing an important government official rather than a top dog in the world of legal consultancy.

The Plot:

It was stupid for my taste. They build a premise in which they want to showcase a task force that can be pitched against someone as powerful as superman, but end up with people who will get pulverized in an instant if superman starts shooting up lasers from his eyes. Agreed, the team has a lot of capabilities; muscle power (Killer Croc), sharp shooting (Deadshot), martial arts blade slashing (Katana), Meta human Flame throwing (Diablo) and insanity incarnated (Harley and Boomerang), but against the Man Of Steel (Speed faster than a bullet, Power output greater than a locomotive, Flight that defies gravity, invulnerability against anything but kryptonite and eye lasers more destructive than Cyclops) they never had a chance to begin with.

Idiotically the team is formed on the basis of a life threat against the members that they can potentially neutralize in the events of the movie (You squad retards could not even snatch a Smartphone from an old lady and snap that military guy’s neck, even though your life depended on it….what a disappointment you fuck-heads are!). As a matter of fact, I am pretty sure that at least Harley had no reason, whatsoever, to return back to prison, unless she was a total moron and just liked killing time in there.

To make matters worse, the squad is deployed along with US military personnel (Whatever happened to keeping their alliance with criminals a secret) not actually to stop a calamity, but simply for an extraction mission in which the asset was not even captured but was too lazy to climb stairs to the rooftop, even though the choppers would come to the rescue anyways.

Lastly, the antagonist is again obsessed with that same age old shitty notion we have seen countless times in these superhero movies, “World destruction and total domination over human race”.

Few more words of unsolicited advice to the scriptwriters:

I never read a Suicide Squad comic book, but I still presume there would be a better plot than this movie amidst one of their issues. If nothing else, instead of sending the Squad against a mystical entity, these guys going on a covert mission to assassinate “Aaladin motha fucka” could have been a better movie plot. Last I checked, his scientist had already developed pointy head Nukes that I am sure would have left a lot of American Aerospace technologist puking their guts out in sheer amazement, ever since “The Dictator” movie came out with the possibility of making such a design for a long range ballistic missile.
