Designing Video Games For Self Expression

Letting players express themselves in a game can be a very powerful tool. It can allow players to tailor a game to their whims, whether aesthetic, beliefs or even playstyle. Methodology The key to self-expression is giving players the ability to make meaningful decisions that are decided by their whims. From this, we derive the following Multiple Acceptable Choices In order for players to make a decision according to their whims, it is necessary for there to be a decision point with multiple acceptable answers. When you decide what number to put into a square in a Sudoku, there is no scope for self-expression as there is only one correct answer, but when choosing clothes for your avatar, there tend to be many acceptable choices with no gameplay impact and so players can choose the one that...

The Future of Virtual Reality – Here’s What The Experts Say

Last year, VR made a comeback in a huge way. This year as well, we’ve seen a lot of games and applications on the platform too, each more incredible than the previous one. For those wondering what’s next for VR, here’s what some big names have to say about the technology’s future. The Next Computing Platform Right now, the hype about VR is the most in the gaming and entertainment industries, but Facebook CEO thinks the future is much bigger. In an interview with Bloomberg, he said that a good candidate to be the next major computing platform. He’s optimistic that soon enough, VR could be a primary form of communication. “Photos are richer than text; video, much richer than photos. But that’s not the end, right? I mean, it’s like this indefini...

Tons Of Devil May Cry 5 Details Leaked – Gameplay, Story & Characters [SPOILERS]

Rumors of a new Devil May Cry game have been making the rounds for the last few weeks, and the game was set to be revealed at the upcoming PSX. New information has now come out that sheds more light on what the game will be like, including the story, characters and the gameplay. Here’s everything we know so far. Tread carefully, there be SPOILERS. For quite some while, we, the Devil May Cry community, have been aware of the existence of a new DMC game. After reading that Hideaki Itsuno plans to unveil his secret project this year, we waited diligently to see what the project was even though we knew full and well what it actually was. We waited through E3, TGS, Paris Games and now we are in late November 2017 with no information about Itsuno’s project. We endured through multiple apol...

The Video Game Industry Needs To Self-Regulate, Avoid Government Involvement

All it takes is enough headlines for lawmakers to notice. They’ve noticed. Today I read that Belgium declares it wants loot boxes declared as gambling, and wants them banned in Europe. Before you scoff at a single example from Europe, we now have the U.S. State of Hawaii initiating an investigation into predatory practices at EA, precipitated by the headlines Battlefront II has been making. Once enough dollars are at stake and enough people are aggravated, the hackles are up. Microtransactions, as many have pointed out, have been extremely successful. Success is a double-edged coin. With a massive flood of new revenue coming in based on, essentially, a different way of packaging and selling the same content amount going out, this should have been expected. Scrutiny. Loot boxes, as a ...

FCC Calls Vote To End Net Neutrality Next Month, And It Has Global Ramifications

The Federal Communications Commission will vote to put an end to its net neutrality rules on 14th December, chairman Ajit Pai announced recently. The final draft of the proposal, apparently removes every existing net neutrality rule, giving the internet providers freedom to experiment with slow and fast lanes, prioritize traffic as they like, even block apps and services. The only rule left is that ISPs have to disclose publicly when they do so. The commission calls its 2015 net neutrality ruling a “misguided and legally flawed approach”, and argues that removing these rules will “facilitate critical broadband investment and innovation by removing regulatory uncertainty and lowering compliance costs.” It goes on to argue that consumer protections aren’t necessary because ...

Tencent Is Bigger Than EA, Activision, Ubisoft And Take-Two Combined

A lot of people in the West are not familiar with this name, but Tencent, a Chinese company is a giant in the gaming world. As noted by Seeking Alpha, the tech firm’s market cap crossed $500 billion recently, making it bigger than EA, Ubisoft, Activision Blizzard and Take-Two combined. In the past year, Tencent has doubled its stock price, and the latest market cap comes after it posted the third quarter, with profits up close to 70%. To put things in perspective, the company’s standing right now is more in line with behemoths like Apple, Facebook, Microsoft and Google’s Alphabet. With stakes in major players like Supercell, Epic Games  and Riot Games, Tencent’s global presence continues to grow day by day. It also seems to have its eyes on the acquisition of Blueho...

EA May Just Have Killed All The Hype For Anthem, At Least For Me

Let’s face it, EA’s actions this year have been nothing but one disappointment after another for gamers everyhwere. From shutting down great studios to implementing highly questionable mechanics in their games, they have done everything to ensure they become one of the most hated companies in the gaming industry. In fact, their response to the Star Wars Battlefront II loot box debacle is the most downvoted post on Reddit! What makes it worse it that once upon a time, in a galaxy not so far away, some of the best titles to come out were published under the banner of EA. And they seem have thrown all of it away, just for one thing – profits. It seems like EA plans to stop at nothing when it comes to sucking the wallets of their customers. So much so, that they’ve actu...
