Looks like the voice of the community is finally getting to the corporate overlords at Electronic Arts. After facing severe backlash for the fundamentally “pay-to-win-” progression system, the company has disabled the purchase of crystals, the in-game currency for Star Wars Battlefront II. Here’s the official statement.
“As we approach the worldwide launch, it’s clear that many of you feel there are still challenges in the design. We’ve heard the concerns about potentially giving players unfair advantages. And we’ve heard that this is overshadowing an otherwise great game. This was never our intention. Sorry we didn’t get this right.
The ability to purchase crystals in-game will become available at a later date, only after we’ve made changes to the game. We’ll share more details as we work through this.”
Now, as EA says, this just might be a temporary measure, but it’s a step in the right direction. Especially considering how notorious the game has become in the gaming community for it’s horrendous implementation of loot boxes with gameplay affecting perks, and heroes locked behind paywalls. According to player estimates, it takes about 4500 hours to unlock everything the game has to offer simply by playing it, or you need to shell $2100. Needless to say, this didn’t bode well with the fans. What remains to be seen now is the changes EA plans to make to the game in order to make it more appealing to the masses.
