After Massive Fan Outcry, GTA V Modding Returns, But With Some Caveats

After Take-Two decided to send a C&D letter to the developer of OpenIV and basically shutting down the single player modding scene, people were upset and angry about it were very vocal about it. This seems to have worked from the looks of it because OpenIV just got an update. Although it’s a small update, this confirms that OpenIV is back!

That’s not all though because the credits section of OpenIV contains a “Special Thanks” to Rockstar Games along with the fact that Rockstar game’s retweeted a tweet from Motherboard which talks about them saving “an uber popular modding tool” for GTA V, which can mean that Rockstar has spoken to Take-Two about this.

While there’s yet to be an official confirmation from Rockstar, this is what they had to say about Single Player Mods.

Now this means that single player mods are allowed with a big no-no towards anything that interferes with the online aspects of the game, but the second (ii) stipulation here is where things get complicated. The whole reason OpenIV is so popular in the modding community is that it allows users to decrypt, read, and edit the game’s proprietary file format. That’s what makes single player modding possible.

While there is no official download link yet for OpenIV, we do know that there is an official statement on its way from GooD-NTS, the creator of OpenIV sometime soon.

So, GTA V mods seem to be back and we’re awaiting an official statement from either Rockstar or GooD-NTS. It seems like Rockstar took a stand for the modding community after the massive negative review floods on steam that has brought down the game’s rating to “Mixed”. From Rockstar’s statement, it does seem that Take-Two is going after mods that ruin GTA Online.  We can only wait to see how this unfold in the next couple of days until then, stay tuned.

  1. Well in their eyes everything ruins online because tons of people left the game due to how idiotic the online counterpart is and how it is filled with idiots and spoiled children while the game being rated 18+.

    • they also censor curse words and everything which is weird for a game rated M that features tons of explicit words and content.
